Shenzhen proves time and again that diners who disdain mall eateries will miss out on some great food, such as the fare at Thai Element in Nanshan’s Coastal City.
Found on the main, second-floor outdoor plaza, with a view of the shopping center’s signature white sculpture along the walkway, Thai Element has a stylish interior with low-slung booths, tile mosaics and mirrored walls.

Appetizers include 3RMB spring rolls and 9RMB satay in beef, chicken or pork, but the winner is the 9RMB Thai leaf chicken roll, well seasoned and served with a spicy dipping sauce.

Larger plates run the gamut from a 128RMB shark soup to 38RMB garlic and pepper chicken wings, but not to be missed is the 36RMB yellow curry with chicken. Deep and rich, with a peppery, turmeric-heavy flavor, diners likely will keep coming back to the curry, no matter how many other dishes are on the table.
Desserts feature a 4RMB coconut cake, 28RMB mango on sticky rice and, yes, 48RMB frog oviduct in papaya.

The menu has large, color pictures of nearly every item, with English translations. Tsing Tao beers cost 16RMB. Imported Singha costs 32RMB per bottle.
